Food security

  • Food security is a situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life
  • When everybody is able to get enough healthy food to be well and active
  • A household is considered to be food secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation

Why engage the public with food security?

  • Food security is one of the big challenges that TBG aims to address through the Big Picnic Project in the Rwenzori region
  • Involving the end users as farmers, consumers, public authorities and community members in finding solutions through research and innovations is regarded as a key to food security

Implementation strategy.

Science cafes; these will be organized in casual places like restaurants, pubs and coffeehouses, they are pen to everyone to engage with scientists on food security,

It will help local people to connect with experts and share ideas on food security


This is a platform that brings people from different back ground of life to discuss and resolve an issue (food security) in order to jointly produce a mutually valued outcome.

It is very important to have ideas of other stakeholders’ minds.

Big Picnic: scientists, policy makers and other stake holders come together, learn from each other as they discuss food security (one of the most challenges facing the planet)

Big picnic will work with the public to open up the debate n the future of our food

The project will encourage collaboration & conversation to build public understanding f food security issues and enable adults and young people and articulate their views to decision makers

Establishing of centralized demo-sites

One demo-site will be established at TBG offices in Fort Portal and 6 others at 6 primary schools in the 3 first implementing sub-counties

In the above sites, vegetables f different types and food crops will be grown and maintained as learning sites to the public

Food Basket exhibitions;

These are farmers and other stakeholders’ events organized for food security knowledge sharing and show casing technologies applied to farming more applicable t all
