Background:
A project implemented by Tooro Botanical Gardens (TBG), Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), in partnership with the National Forestry Authority (NFA). This project has been implemented since 2022 with generous financial support from the Fondation Franklinia enabling the conservation and restoration of rare, socio-economically important, and threatened native tree species in Uganda.
The project Goal:
The project goal is that the 48 target threatened tree species be conserved at Fort Portal Central Forest Reserve (Tooro Botanical Gardens) and Kagombe Central Forest Reserve in Uganda with improved national planning for the conservation of the remaining threatened tree species.
Project Objectives:
- Increase understanding of propagation for 27 globally and 21 nationally threatened tree species in Uganda with over 200,000 seedlings available for use in restoration activities.
- Integrated tree conservation is undertaken for 21 nationally and 27 globally threatened tree species each planted in 1 ex-situ seed orchard and at least 2 in-situ sites for the species’ long-term conservation
- Conservation planning for tree conservation improved and 1 national plan for Uganda’s globally threatened tree species developed.
- National Conservation Action Plan and the importance of threatened tree conservation disseminated nationally, to the government, to 12 community groups at priority sites, and to the general public to increase capacity for tree conservation.
