Since 2006 Tooro Botanical Gardens in partnership with Save Our Species and PROTOS has been spearheading conservation of Encephalartos whitelockii cycads in the downstream part of Mpanga catchment in western Uganda and activities in the project related to the demarcation of “no go” areas, compensation investment by the provision of water and infrastructure, creation of community nurseries for re-establishing lost Mpanga fall cycad into their habitat which was lost as a result of hydropower construction. This Cycad is endemic in this area and to the entire Albertine rift and is globally critically endangered as per IUCN red list status.
