Seed Bank;

Tooro Botanical Gardens has a newly established state of the art seed bank funded in part by Terraformation. The facility collects, stores and preserves seeds from various plant species. This is done to safeguard genetic diversity and ensure the availability of plant genetic resources for future generations.

The primary purposes of the seed bank are;

  • Conservation by storing seed from various plant species to protect against the loss of genetic resources due to factor like habitat loss and disease.
  • Crop diversity protection by ensuring that we have access to diverse genetic traits that can be used to develop new crop varieties.
  • Research by providing access to diverse genetic materials that support scientific research related to plant genetics, breeding and conservation.
  • Reintroduction in cases where plant species shave become endangered or locally extinct seed banks can provide seed or restoration efforts.

The seed bank is crucial for biodiversity conservation and agricultural research. The seed bank has a collection of seeds of endangered plants from surrounding forests carefully preserved.

Seed banks are essential to safeguard our agricultural and ecological future and the need to protect plant biodiversity and food security in a constantly changing climate.
